Lupin Season is here

Our favourite season has arrived. As summer and Christmas approach, the South Island landscapes burst into vibrant purple and pink lupins, creating stunning contrast against the turquoise lakes, a truly photogenic sight.

Lupins were introduced in New Zealand by a farmer in the 1940s, hoping to make the soils richer. Little did they know how fast these weeds would spread! Lupins are now part of the South Island’s most famous landscapes and our pink fields draw visitors from around the world. However, as a non-native invasive species, these beautiful flowers are now controlled to protect our local ecosystems from their spreading.

Summer is the best season to see lupins in the South Island, from Tekapo, through the Lindis Pass, to Queenstown.
