Late Afternoon, Dusky Sound
-
Shaped by monochromatic silhouettes, the composition is enlightened with beams piercing through the clouds to create a vibrant atmosphere. Arranged in tonal bands, the layered mountain ranges gradually dissolve into light and mist. In its compositional simplicity and tonal restraint, the treatment recalls the visual language of traditional Japanese woodcut prints. This connection is subtly reinforced by the use of washi paper. Its organic fibres and soft, textured surface absorb and diffuse the ink, muting contrast and softening edges. The paper itself becomes part of the atmosphere.
